The Monsal Trail

This 8.5 mile trail in the Peak District National Park follows the route of the old Midland Railway main line through spectacular scenery. To coincide with a major project to reopen 4 disused tunnels along the route we were commissioned to produce signs to orientate users and to interpret the fascinating history of the railway and the landscape through which it ran. Three of the signs, located within old stations, are designed to resemble old railway signals. The others, in more rural locations, are mounted between old sleepers to continue the railway theme. The panels are designed to evoke the feel of the Midland Railway whilst also looking contemporary. The history of each location is told in a concise way that engages the casual visitor whilst still having something of interest for the more knowledgeable enthusiast. Extensive use was made of old photos to show how the locations looked in their heyday.
