CAERPHILLY CASTLE
This spectacular 13th century fortress is one of the largest castles in Europe and the second largest in Britain. It was designed for maximum impact - to impress visitors with an awe-inspiring display of power and wealth. Such a dramatic site demanded an equally dynamic approach to the interpretation. The panels are a major departure from the traditionally-styled interpretation that they replaced. Simple stories are told with brief text, punchy headings and dramatic reconstruction drawings. Their eye-grabbing style dynamically bring to life Caerphilly Castle’s dual roles as a vast status symbol and a ruthless killing machine! The impregnable defences are humourously explained on the Total Medieval Wipe-Out panel - running from right to left along the railings of a bridge across one of the moats. A group of replica siege engines are brought to life with interactive panels and interpretation in the style of Top Trumps cards.
